Knowlton goes to the wire in the Oxford 250 (The Best Ever?)
In only his first appearance of the 03 season, the cagey veteran Knowlton came within a half a car length of pulling
off the greatest upset in oxford 250 history. Starting 30th thanks to a loaned trailer from Martel Motorsports and a
borrowed motor from Gardiner and June Leavitt, Knowlton made his way to the front. Smooth and consistent,
he ripped off solid lap times. He is no new comer to this event having qualified for eight previous 250’s
and a top 10 finish.
The KRE crew pulled off a flawless 4 tire stop to keep the 88x on the lead lap midway though the event and by lap 247 a
four car incident in turn three brought about the 11th and final caution flag. Knowlton raced passed the leader
in the dirt to take the lead at the yellow. Racing back to the yellow was the norm all day, but it seems that
passing Ben Rowe was a no no. Rowe was awarded the front spot and on the restart Rowe got the jump on the 88x.
With two to go they battled side by side charging hard to claim the title. As the white flew the 88x had the lead
coming into 3 by about two feet. Rowe slid up to the mid groove and Knowlton was digging (with an apparent left front
tire going down). Coming off of turn four Rowe had the momentum as 2001 champ Gary Drew dove to the low side. At the
line it was Rowe, followed by the 88 at half a car length.
Coined “The Best 250 Ever” the crowd was on there feet and loudly applauded the racing they just witnessed. Even though
the 88x didn’t take home the title, they graciously accepted the 2nd place winnings of $12,300 – not a bad
day for any short track racer.
